SURVEY SHOWS LITTLE OR NO REPRIEVE FOR LAND-USE DEVELOPERS IN 2006, COMPARED TO 2005

According to the second annual Saint Index© - research brought forth by The Saint Consulting Group to measure attitudes toward land-use development - three-quarters of Americans do not want any new development in their own communities. Some development sectors in the 2006 survey encountered less opposition this year, although opposition still continues: apartments/ condominiums, casinos, grocery stores, office buildings, large shopping centers, and single-family housing. However, opposition has grown towards biotech research facilities, landfills, power plants, and quarries.  Cold comfort: more opposition for Wal-Mart, but less intensely.

HOW DO YOU SAY “NIMBY” IN BRITISH?
Thought that Brits were less critical, less litigious than the average American?  That’s changing rapidly, according to two surveys – The Saint Index© - done by The Saint Consulting Group in the US and the UK.  This graphic compares percentages of opposition to development [research by The UMass/Lowell Center for Economic and Civic Opinion and Communicate Research in London].  “We are becoming more outspoken, more American,” reports Nick Keable, Saint’s VP/UK Operations.  Since 1983, Saint Consulting, a $20-million company, has specialized in winning zoning and land-use battles, and in protecting clients from unwanted competition.

HARSH CLIMATE FOR LAND-USE DEVELOPMENT
Not all land-use resistance is towards Wal-Mart. According to The Saint Index – a new nationwide poll on development issues conducted for The Saint Consulting Group (www.tscg.biz), which specializes in land-use politics – citizens are more likely to oppose landfills, casinos, power plants, and quarries. Most would, however, support grocery stores and single-family housing, even if they felt their community is overbuilt. Other findings: Some 83% of suburban Americans don’t want new development in their communities and one out of five American families has opposed new development projects.
